Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
