Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Claims the Premier Place.

At first glance, Lux may look more like a challenging university examination rather than a new popular music album from a musician whose previous single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided across four separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, often through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity by itself renders the efforts of other artists look quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux succeeds in avoid dry intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and complete credit going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to fuse the past with modern styles, its stakes are much higher here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts in two, the listener still want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful energy shines brightly on the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge crashes in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts to the frenetic single featuring racing strings, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener never quite know—or even wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost each track concludes at a totally distinct place than how it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work starts off dark and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds around a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks as it spirals upward. This trick gets echoed by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major releases of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy drink, flit from conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
