A group of seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
